1859 Memoirs of Vidocq; The Principle Agent of the French Police written by himself, and translated from the original French, expressly for this edition ; with illustrative engravings from original designs by Cruikshank. Published by T. B. Peterson and Co. This book is incredibly rare and collectible. The book is in remarkable condition with minimal shelfwear and a slight wave to some pages. Eugène-François Vidocq (1775 – 1857) was a French criminal turned criminalist, whose life story inspired several writers, including Victor Hugo, Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Honoré de Balzac. The former criminal became the founder and first director of the crime-detection Sûreté nationale and the head of the first known private detective agency. Vidocq is considered to be the father of modern criminology and of the French police department. He is regarded as the first private detective. I have tons of rare books!
