His interest in animals and rocks developed at an early age, and is reflected in his illustrations for science fiction and children's literature, and in his wildlife art. He was born in New York City in 1935. As a four-year-old he drew pictures to communicate with his friends, who spoke Chinese, Italian, Irish and Greek in the Babel of his Queens neighborhood.
