An incredible discovery of a document dating back to July through December 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War! The handwritten paper book has maintained fantastic shape considering its age. It is written in the German language but after some translation it appears to be nationalist songs or poems that became very popular during the unification of Germany. After each of the poems is a date of when the soldier wrote it. Sometimes noting “by the river”. A sort of table of contents at the end of the book. I haven’t been able to see who the author is but it all appears to be the same writing. So the names that appear after each poem appear to be the original author and not a name of soldier. When you read these stanzas about “the French enemy” in the spirit of German nationalism you can feel the tone being set for the upcoming world wars. Please see all images for further details. Picture of war painting on the front photo is for display only.
