The Flora Danica collection by Royal Copenhagen is one of Denmark's most prestigious porcelain patterns, renowned for its intricate botanical illustrations. The collection draws inspiration from the comprehensive botanical work Flora Danica, initiated in 1761, which documented the native plants of the Danish kingdom. In 1790, Royal Copenhagen was commissioned to create a "Flora Danica" dinner service, featuring gilded edges and botanical motifs copied from the Flora Danica illustrations. This service was intended as a gift for Catherine the Great. In addition to tableware, the Flora Danica motif was adapted into jewelry pieces, notably during the mid-20th century. Collaborations between Royal Copenhagen and silversmiths, such as Anton Michelsen, led to the creation of brooches and pendants that combined porcelain plaques adorned with hand-painted botanical designs set in sterling silver or vermeil (gold-plated silver) frames.
